Celebrating White Christmas with HTC White Diamond

December 16, 2008

The best selling HTC Touch Diamond which sold more than 3M units worldwide now comes available in White. It seems like a trend to always introduce a “white” version on a best selling gadget.

Nothing inside has changed. Only the back housing, side bezel and accessories. Would be nice if they come out with a HTC Touch Flo.

The front panel remains the same. HTC only changed the side bezel to silver and back cover to white.

Only thing still in black is the battery.

Personally, I think the front panel should be also changed to white in color.

Review: HTC Touch HD (T8282)

December 4, 2008

htc_logo

Note: This is a follow up of the previous Sneak Preview of HTC Touch HD done previously.

HTC Touch HD Box Front

HTC Touch HD Box Front

As mentioned in the previous sneak preview, the unit we had was an engineering set and therefore lots of software was missing and the unit is just down right buggy. Yesterday we just received the commercial units and boy are we excited about it!

What is in the box?

HTC Touch HD Box Content

HTC Touch HD Box Content

You get a cloth pouch, 8GB memory card, extra stylus, wired headset, A/C charger and USB cable with some manuals & CD.

What is so different about HTC Touch HD compared to other HTC Touch family?

1. Stock Tab

Turn on the HTC Touch HD and you will see a new feature at the TouchFlo 3D. The “Stock” Tab

HTC Touch HD - Stock Tab

HTC Touch HD - Stock Tab

At the side of the screen is a list of all the stock & indices portfolio which you can manually set.

Click on the “View All” button and you will be greeted with all the indices or stock portfolio.

Adding a new stock code is very simple! Just click on Menu –> Quote and you will be greeted with a Search Screen. Type in the name of the stock, click the “+” and you are done!

However, I found a “bug” in the Stock tab. It is not life threatening but still a bug nevertheless. Look below and see if you can spot the problem.

HTC Touch HD - KLSE Indices

HTC Touch HD - KLSE Indices

If you can’t spot the problem, the answer is this: The Blue line (indicator) does not correspond with the value “Y – axis” of the graph. The High of KLSE was “850.64” and the Low was “843.32” but the Y-axis value is showing “910.54”. This however seems to be limited to KLSE indices. Other indices seems to be showing correctly.

2. Weather Tab

HTC also updated the “Weather” tab to show a bit more information. Because HTC Touch HD comes with a super big hi-res screen, they manage to squeeze in 4 more days of weather forecast!

HTC Touch HD - All new Weather Tab

3. Heptic Feedback (Vibration)

Just like Samsung Omnia, HTC Touch HD also have a “vibration” feedback mechanism whereby every single key press on the “BUTTON” and selected programs will give a slight vibration to let you know the button is pressed.

HTC Touch HD - TouchFLO settings

You can also set to give a slight vibrate when the data connection is established.

 4. Customizable TouchFLO tabs

The new updated TouchFlo 3D (1.3.35590.0_1630.38) now comes with “Customize Tabs” function in the Setting Tab. You can choose to remove certain tab which you think is not necessary and also re-arrange tab which are more frequently used at the front!

5. Auto Volume Control

A new feature found in the Settings Menu. It automatically adjust the volume of voice input when recording and also the volume during video playback.

6. Integration with YouTube

HTC is now more tightly integrated with YouTube service. It has a default program in the Program Tab, and now have 2 more programs to integrate with YouTube; Uploader & Account Manager.

Account Manager

Found in Settings –> Connection menu, this program basically just stores your UserID and password for YouTube. It doesn’t seems to allow me to add other UserID and pasword into it.

HTC Touch HD - Account Manager

Uploader

Found in Settings –> Systems Menu, this program basically uploads video taken using the in-built video recording function into YouTube. The video you are trying to upload will showup and you can re-try or cancel them here.

Conclusion

htc-touch-hd-settings-11 htc-touch-hd-settings-21 htc-touch-hd-settings-31

There aren’t much difference in terms of built quality/finish between the engineering and commercial unit. Software wise, it is much more stable. I didn’t encounter any problems with taking pictures or freeze during picture viewing. Everything seems to work fine except for the bug I mentioned above on the KLSE indices screen.

I personally love the stock application! If only you can put in notification alert and shares bought/sold, it would be perfect. Guess we will have to wait for the next release perhaps.

One handed operation on this device is almost not possible due to the size of the device. Unless you have a long thumb, reaching the “Start” button is difficult. Thumb typing is manageable as the on-screen buttons are pretty large. The Hi-Res screen is a feature to die for!

Surfing the Internet using Opera is clear, precise and fast. Only problem is lack of flash support.

HTC Touch HD - Opera

HTC Touch HD - Opera

Pros:

  • Large WVGA 800 X 480 Hi-res Screen
  • Nice design and built quality
  • 5.0MP Auto focus camera
  • 3.5mm audio jack
  • Fast processor and large memory
  • New Stock Tab
  • Tight integration with YouTube
  • Heptic (Vibration) Feedback
  • Updated version of TouchFLO 3D

Cons:

  • a bit on the heavier side
  • No flash
  • Lacking a D-Pad navigation button makes navigation difficult
  • Reset & Memory card slot hidden behind the battery cover
  • Super small status LED at the Power button (Not really a con, but I almost miss this!)

This is now available for sale at our online store here

Year end is always a busy month for most electronic manufacturing companies. HTC is currently launching one model after another. Last month saw the launching of HTC S740 and barely few weeks after that the HTC Viva. Now, we have the HTC Touch 3G and soon we will be having HTC Touch HD!

Un-boxing the HTC Touch 3G

All HTC products now comes with slightly smaller packaging. Good move to save space, cost, money and environment!

HTC Touch 3G Contents

The content is pretty standard with a earpiece, screen protector, AC Adapter, USB cable, CDs and some manuals. You will have to fork out extra for a GPS car holder to make use of the built-in GPS functions.

Handsfree Headset

The bundled 2 piece headset with volume control provides decent sound quality.

The HTC Touch 3G comes with matte (rubber) surface. This is good as it does not requires constant wiping after use and also provides good grip.

HTC Touch 3G button

Much like the HTC Viva, there are only a “Hang Up”, “Call” and a “D” pad controller button. Clean lines, simple button and curves at the correct corners makes this PDA looking very elegant.

HTC Touch 3G Back

HTC Touch 3G Back

The speaker is located at the back of the phone. This might be a problem for most PDA as music/ringtone might get muffled when using a casing.

With the back cover off, you get access to the SIM card slot, battery slot, memory card slot, reset button and a lanyard knot area.

Using the HTC Touch 3G

The most common question asked is; What is the major difference between HTC Touch and HTC Touch 3G besides the 3G?

1. Windows Mobile 6.1

Windows Mobile 6.1

Windows Mobile 6.1

HTC Touch 3G is pre-loaded with the latest Windows Mobile 6.1. The difference between version 6.0 and 6.1 can be found here.

2. GPS (Global Positioning System)

You can install mapping softwares like Garmin or MapKing to have turn by turn navigation on HTC Touch 3G.

3. Processor and Memory

HTC Touch 3G is twice faster and with slightly larger RAM size too.

HTC Touch 3G Specification

HTC Touch 3G Specification

4. Slightly thinner, lighter but longer and thicker

HTC Touch P3452 is 99.9mm (L) X 58mm (W) X 13.9mm (T) (112g with battery)

HTC Touch 3G is 102mm (L) X 53.6mm (W) X 14.5mm (T) (96g with battery)

5. 3.2MP versus 2.0MP

HTC Touch 3G got an upgrade in the camera department to 3.2MP camera. See below for sample of pictures taken using HTC Touch 3G.

6. Quad-band versus Tri-band

HTC Touch 3G is HSDPA (3.5G) with quad-band capabilities.

7. Longer talk time and standby time

Although both spots the same battery capacity, HTC Touch 3G has a 100 minutes longer talk time and 165 hours more of standby time. How HTC achieves this baffles me as HTC Touch 3G is twice faster and both runs on same capacity battery. Maybe this is because Qualcomm produces more energy efficient processor that Texas Instrument.

Size Comparison

To give you an idea the size of the HTC Touch 3G, here are some pictures taken with HTC Touch Pro.

Launch Price: RM1,299

Fresh Gear rating: 7/10

Specifications:

  • TI’s OMAP™ 850, 201 MHz
  • Windows Mobile® 6.1 Professional
  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

HTC recently launched a low entry PDA targeting non 3G users. Costing only RM1,299 this value buy PDA is certainly within the budget of most PDA hunters.

Un-boxing the HTC Viva

img_1957 img_1958

As a low budget phone, HTC Viva only comes with the bare necessities.

  • AC Adapter
  • Sync Cable
  • Manual + CD
  • Screen Protector

img_1959

Package content of HTC Viva

Unlike other HTC product, it does not comes with extra stylus, memory card, pouch or even a wired headset! So, HTC Viva buyers beware, you have to fork out extra to get a wired/wireless headset or else you cannot use this on the road.

First Impression

Looking at the HTC Viva for the first time did not give us the “WOW” factor. The shinning cover looks cheap but feels very solid. The design is very simple with only a 5 way keypad with a tiny call and hang up button at the front. The cover is shinny grey with gold dust like finishing.

Overall design and specification looks pretty similar to HTC Touch.

Using the HTC Viva

When using the HTC Viva, we realized the responsiveness. The TouchFLO is very very smooth, quick and nimble. Although the processor is only 200MHz, at times we feel that the HTC Viva is even smoother than HTC Touch Pro with 528MHz processor!

HTC Viva Main Screen

HTC Viva Main Screen

The HTC Viva is very closely related to HTC Touch P3452. Therefore, it is only natural that a lot of our customer ask us which is a better PDA. Below are some comparison between the 2 and you can decide for yourself.

1. Old and New

HTC Touch P3452 is already in the market for more than 2 years if you count the previous HTC Touch (P3450). It is pretty much the first and also the most sought after HTC Touch series PDA Phone.

2. Windows Mobile OS

HTC Touch P3452 uses Windows Mobile 6.0 while HTC Viva uses Windows Mobile 6.1. The main difference between the 2 OSes is security and threaded SMS. Extremely useful and fun feature long missing in PDA phones.

Windows Mobile 6.1

Windows Mobile 6.1

3. Look and feel

Without a doubt, HTC Touch P3452 feels more classy with its rubber like finish. It also spots a flat touch screen where most of the PDA are moving towards. However, our review shows that the HTC Viva is very smooth and does not feel lag compared to HTC Touch P3452.

4. Specification

The HTC Viva specification is slightly better than HTC Touch. It comes with Bluetooth 2.0 (A2DP) and it is now Quad-band. Other than that, all processor, memory, camera and battery capacity is the same is HTC Touch P3452.

5. Price

HTC Viva is few hundred ringgit cheaper compared to HTC Touch P3452.

We would recommend our customer to go for the HTC Viva as it is newer, better OS, updated TouchFLO, slightly better feature and cheaper too.

Conclusion

This phone is like the Air Asia of the PDA. Being low budget, HTC threw out a lot of the “un-necessary” accessories. Pack the content tighter and made the box even smaller. Sometimes it might not be a good thing as essential items like wired headset are not included. Even the battery is stored into the unit itself to save space. Do not worry as there is a plastic sheet to prevent electrical contact of the phone and battery.

Pros:

  • Value for money
  • Very smooth Touch Flo
  • Windows Mobile 6.1
  • Solid built quality
  • Touch screen is very ‘light’. Do not require much force/pressure.

Cons

  • Lack of essential accessory like wired headset
  • Memory card is not hot-swappable
  • No auto-focus feature

Tips: Reseting your Apple iPod / iPhone

October 9, 2008

Like any electronic devices, sometimes something inside might go wrong and you find that your iPod is not responding to any key press. Fret not, this is what you can try to do before you call your Apple hotline or your favorite retailer.

Reseting your Apple iPod do not remove any of your songs. It MIGHT remove some of your customized settings. Restoring however will set your Apple iPod to factory default.

Apple iPod Nano/ Video / Classic

Apple iPod Nano (1st Generation)

Apple iPod Nano (2nd Generation)

Apple iPod Nano (3rd Generation)

Apple iPod Nano (4th Generation)

Apple iPod Video (5th Generation)

Apple iPod Classic

STEPS:

  • Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  • Press and hold the Menu and Select (Centre) buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.

If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn’t set to go to sleep.

Apple iPod Shuffle

Apple iPod Shuffle (1st Generation)

Apple iPod Shuffle (2nd Generation)

To reset iPod shuffle:

  • Disconnect iPod shuffle from the computer (if connected).
  • Move the switch on the back of iPod shuffle to the off position.

Tip: When iPod shuffle is off, the green stripe by the switch is not visible. (See below illustration)

  • Wait 5 seconds
  • Move the switch on the back to the play in order or the shuffle position. The green stripe will be visible in either position
  • iPod shuffle is now reset. If after resetting iPod shuffle you are going to attach it to your computer, be sure to place the switch in the off position. If you were resetting as part of some troubleshooting steps, continue with those steps now. For general troubleshooting steps see the iPod shuffle troubleshooting and service FAQ.

iPod Reset Utility / iPod Shuffle Reset Utility

Use iPod Reset Utility to restore the iPod Shuffle back to their factory settings when iTunes is unable to do so and the reset above do not help. The process completely erases all music and data and reinstalls the iPod software version listed below:

  • iPod shuffle (1st generation) – iPod Software version 1.1.5
  • iPod shuffle (2nd generation) – iPod Software version 1.0.4

IMPORTANT NOTE: iPod Reset Utility is intended for use only with the iPod models listed above; other iPods are NOT supported.

IMPORTANT NOTE: iPod shuffle Reset Utility is only for iPod shuffle (1st generation) 512 MB and 1 GB models only. Any other iPod, including iPod shuffle (2nd generation), is not supported.

Use iPod Reset Utility to fix the following issues:

  • iPod will not play music, and cannot be restored using iTunes.
  • iPod is not recognized by iTunes, but is visible in My Computer or in Device Manager on a Windows PC, or in Apple System Profiler on a Mac.
  • iPod shuffle (1st generation) is identified as a device in “Recovery mode.” iPod shuffle (2nd generation) is identified as a “USB DFU device.”

Important: Read Before Using

  • You must have administrator privileges to use this utility.
  • iPod Reset Utility restores your iPod to factory conditions and installs current iPod software for that model, deleting all content on iPod.
  • If iPod Reset Utility cannot reset your iPod, then your iPod may need service. Go to the iPod Service page for additional information.

System Requirements

  • Mac OS X 10.3.9, or later*
  • Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4, Windows XP with Service Pack 2**

*Mac OS X 10.2.8 customers with an iPod shuffle (1st generation) can use the iPod shuffle Reset Utility

Updates: HTC Touch Cruise – Windows Mobile® 6.1 Upgrade

October 3, 2008

HTC recently release an upgrade for HTC Touch Cruise PDA Phone. This upgrade to WM6.1 also fixes some of the bugs in the Touch Cruise.

  • Bluetooth Headset: It may happen that you cannot hear anything when using Bluetooth headsets (Jabra JX10, Jabra BT500 or Samsung WEP 150) even when it has already successfully reconnected with the Touch Cruise.
  • Default Onscreen Keyboard: It may happen that the device will not remember the last onscreen keyboard used. Before, the onscreen keyboard always defaults to the Touch Keyboard.
  • Title Bar: It may happen that the Title Bar disappears when you go back to the Home screen.
  • Camera Viewfinder: It may happen that the viewfinder is cut when you open a Powerpoint file and then tap Options.
  • GPS Mode: It may happen that the display becomes “abnormal” after taking a picture in GPS mode and then going into Suspend/Resume mode.
  • FM Radio Speaker/Headset Mode: It may happen that the FM Radio program uses the incorrect output mode (Speaker or Headset) before the application launches.
  • TouchFLO Setting: It may happen that the TouchFLO setting does not appear in the Settings > System tab.
  • TomTom in Home Screen: It may happen that TomTom does not show in the Home screen.
User are advised to back up before the upgrade.
The upgrade can be downloaded directly from the HTC website here
