News: How to check if your HTC is Authorized Set?

AP phones (more populary known as “water set” or 水机) are units which are imported into the country without proper permit/distribution channels. These units usually do not go through proper channels and thus avoid paying taxes and testing like SIRIM. AP phones are very popular among famous brands like Nokia or SonyEricsson. However, of late with the growing demand for PDA phones like HTC, AP version of HTC is also flooding the market. Given that PDA phones are generally more expensive makes it even more attractive for some consumers to consider.

To curb or minimize the AP problems, principal brands generally do not honor warranty claims not sold in the respective country. So, if you bought an AP unit of HTC and your touch screen have problem, you will have to where to turn to!

You are always strongly advised to purchase an authorized set. Yes it cost slightly more but warranty has it premium. We even know of some retailers cheating customers by claiming their units are a genuine authorized unit and making a huge profit out of it!!

So, how do you know if you are buying an authorized unit?

1. Check the HTC website for the local list of authorized reseller.
2. Check the authorized distributor website with the IMEI number of your HTC PDA.

Today, SIS Distribution (M) Sdn. Bhd. (the sole distributor of HTC products) launched an online search for all the HTC PDA sold as authorized unit in Malaysia. It is simple to use, just key-in the IMEI number in the search engine and you will know if it is AP or authorized unit.

Event: Miss Tourism International 2008

Taking a break from all those gadgets review…

Today is the launch of CSL S1 Swarovski Designed Phone. They also manage to bring in the Miss Tourism International 2008 World Final. It is held at the Digital World, Puchong IOI Mall.

There are well over 40 captivating contestants parading themselves on stage.

Those pretty Miss Tourism convinced me to visit Korea, Korea again, UK, Vietnam and Romania. Rusia is a no-go.

Celebrating White Christmas with HTC White Diamond

The best selling HTC Touch Diamond which sold more than 3M units worldwide now comes available in White. It seems like a trend to always introduce a “white” version on a best selling gadget. 

Nothing inside has changed. Only the back housing, side bezel and accessories. Would be nice if they come out with a HTC Touch Flo.

Review: HTC Touch HD (T8282)

Note: This is a follow up of the previous Sneak Preview of HTC Touch HD done previously.

As mentioned in the previous sneak preview, the unit we had was an engineering set and therefore lots of software was missing and the unit is just down right buggy. Yesterday we just received the commercial units and boy are we excited about it!

What is in the box?

You get a cloth pouch, 8GB memory card, extra stylus, wired headset, A/C charger and USB cable with some manuals & CD. 

What is so different about HTC Touch HD compared to other HTC Touch family?

1. Stock Tab

Turn on the HTC Touch HD and you will see a new feature at the TouchFlo 3D. The “Stock” Tab

At the side of the screen is a list of all the stock & indices portfolio which you can manually set.

Click on the “View All” button and you will be greeted with all the indices or stock portfolio.

Adding a new stock code is very simple! Just click on Menu –> Quote and you will be greeted with a Search Screen. Type in the name of the stock, click the “+” and you are done!

However, I found a “bug” in the Stock tab. It is not life threatening but still a bug nevertheless. Look below and see if you can spot the problem.

If you can’t spot the problem, the answer is this: The Blue line (indicator) does not correspond with the value “Y – axis” of the graph. The High of KLSE was “850.64″ and the Low was “843.32″ but the Y-axis value is showing “910.54″. This however seems to be limited to KLSE indices. Other indices seems to be showing correctly.

 

2. Weather Tab

HTC also updated the “Weather” tab to show a bit more information. Because HTC Touch HD comes with a super big hi-res screen, they manage to squeeze in 4 more days of weather forecast!

3. Heptic Feedback (Vibration)

Just like Samsung Omnia, HTC Touch HD also have a “vibration” feedback mechanism whereby every single key press on the “BUTTON” and selected programs will give a slight vibration to let you know the button is pressed.

You can also set to give a slight vibrate when the data connection is established.

 4. Customizable TouchFLO tabs

The new updated TouchFlo 3D (1.3.35590.0_1630.38) now comes with “Customize Tabs” function in the Setting Tab. You can choose to remove certain tab which you think is not necessary and also re-arrange tab which are more frequently used at the front!

5. Auto Volume Control

A new feature found in the Settings Menu. It automatically adjust the volume of voice input when recording and also the volume during video playback.

6. Integration with YouTube

HTC is now more tightly integrated with YouTube service. It has a default program in the Program Tab, and now have 2 more programs to integrate with YouTube; Uploader & Account Manager.

Found in Settings –> Connection menu, this program basically just stores your UserID and password for YouTube. It doesn’t seems to allow me to add other UserID and pasword into it.

Found in Settings –> Systems Menu, this program basically uploads video taken using the in-built video recording function into YouTube. The video you are trying to upload will showup and you can re-try or cancel them here.

Conclusion

  

There aren’t much difference in terms of built quality/finish between the engineering and commercial unit. Software wise, it is much more stable. I didn’t encounter any problems with taking pictures or freeze during picture viewing. Everything seems to work fine except for the bug I mentioned above on the KLSE indices screen. 

I personally love the stock application! If only you can put in notification alert and shares bought/sold, it would be perfect. Guess we will have to wait for the next release perhaps.

One handed operation on this device is almost not possible due to the size of the device. Unless you have a long thumb, reaching the “Start” button is difficult. Thumb typing is manageable as the on-screen buttons are pretty large. The Hi-Res screen is a feature to die for!

Surfing the Internet using Opera is clear, precise and fast. Only problem is lack of flash support.

• Tight integration with YouTube

• Updated version of TouchFLO 3D

Cons:

• a bit on the heavier side
• No flash
• Lacking a D-Pad navigation button makes navigation difficult
• Reset & Memory card slot hidden behind the battery cover
• Super small status LED at the Power button (Not really a con, but I almost miss this!)
